How to Cut Pizza WITHOUT a Pizza Cutter

Lemon Ricotta Pizza with Calabrian Chili Oil

In this quick and fun tutorial I'll show you my favorite way to cut pizza, which doesn't require a pizza cutter OR a knife... In fact, it requires one item that everyone has in their home: scissors!

Who am I to tell YOU how to cut pizza?

If you're new here, hi! And welcome to my recipe site, On The Bias. I'm Gianna, a home-cook-turned-recipe-creator in Brooklyn, NY. And I am a self-proclaimed "Pizza Scissors Enthusiast."

Though my love for food and creating recipes spans various cuisines, my specialty is Italian-American cooking. This is what I grew up on.

One of my favorite things to eat that really brings me back to my childhood is my Grandmother's sheet pan pizza. It's a thing of beauty, something I grew up enjoying quite frequently, but now only get to experience a couple times per year.

My grandmother, along with many other Italian home cooks I know don't own fancy wood burning ovens or Ooni Ovens, which are quite a craze right now. They make absolutely delicious, crispy pizzas in their home ovens. And many of them, like me, swear by scissors as the best way to cut pizza.

Why Scissors?

Scissors allow you a great amount of control when cutting your pizza. You can cut the pizza into small triangles and squares, longer strips, or any other shape you like. In my opinion, they are also easier to use than pizza cutters.

Pizza cutters require a full wind up and strong, forceful roll. Even then, they don't always cut through the pizza. Scissors get it right every time. That snipping sound is also just so satisfying.

How to cut pizza with scissors

  1. Allow the pizza to cool for 2-3 minutes, until the crust is cool enough to handle.
  2. Using a spatula, loosen the pizza from the sheet pan. Or, if using a pizza stone, transfer the pizza to a large cutting board.
  3. Snip away! This is the fun part. Make uniform shapes, or get creative! Everyone will enjoy picking their perfect piece.
