If a recipe calls for freshly grated nutmeg, don't even second guess it. You're going to want to oblige. Primarily because it is infinitely more complex and flavorful than pre-ground nutmeg. It's brighter and spicier, and much more potent too. A little goes a long way.
So if you don't know how to grate nutmeg, you will in just a few minutes!
- Buy whole nutmeg seeds. (I refer to them as pods) Most grocery stores sell them.
- Tightly hold the nutmeg pod in one hand and grate it against a Microplane grater.
Best Uses for Fresh Nutmeg
Now that you know how to grate nutmeg, you can start adding it to your daily cooking. Here are a few truly excellent dishes a little fresh nutmeg can bring to the next level.
- Mac and cheese

- Bolognese sauce or ragu
